Melbourne – Sunday, October 11, 2026
MP Ghayath Yazbek and his wife continued their tour of Australia, beginning his fifth day in the city of Melbourne by participating in Holy Mass at Our Lady of Lebanon Maronite Church in Thornbury, in the northern part of the city. He was accompanied by the Australian Coordinator for the Lebanese Forces party, Mr. Tony Obeid, and the head of the party’s Melbourne center, Mr. Elie Melhem, leading a delegation of center officials and members.
The Mass was presided over by Father Richard Jabbour, the parish priest, who welcomed MP Yazbek, wishing him success on his tour and a safe return to Lebanon. After the Mass, Mr. and Mrs. Yazbek met with members of the congregation in the church’s youth hall. The gathering featured a cocktail reception hosted by the members of the Melbourne center, during which there was direct engagement with attendees from the Lebanese diaspora in Melbourne. During the interaction, Yazbek emphasized his keenness to maintain ongoing communication with the Lebanese diaspora and to strengthen the bridges of connection between resident Lebanon and expatriate Lebanon.
Following the gathering in the evening, Mr. and Mrs. Yazbek accepted an invitation to a dinner banquet held in his honor at Al Saniour City View Lebanese restaurant along Melbourne’s scenic waterfront. The event was attended by Obeid and Melhem, leading a delegation of center officials and members. Other invitees included Father Richard Jabbour, parish priest of Our Lady of Lebanon Maronite Church, several candidates of Lebanese descent running in the upcoming Australian elections, and a number of individuals originally from the Batroun region residing in Australia.
In his speech, MP Ghayath Yazbek and his wife thanked their hosts and the members of the community for the warm reception. He praised their national commitment and deep connection to their homeland, stressing that “the steadfast and correct path is the way to achieve a strong and effective republic.” He added that hope always remains to reach safety in a country that has suffered greatly, noting that the security and political conditions are better than before, despite the difficult situation Lebanon is still currently experiencing.
